What is a printer drum and why is it important?
The printer drum is a vital part to ensure that your printer is working at its best. You may change the toner cartridge but still notice that the print is faded. This usually indicates that your printer drum needs replacing.
The printer drum is a rolling pin within laser printers. Images are printed by using a laser beam that shines on the drum in the required shape, whether this be images or text, to create electrostatic images. The drum is then rolled through the toner which is a powder that covers the electrostatic patterns. As the paper rolls through the drum, the toner is applied. The powdered toner is then fused by being heated which creates the printed document.
Whilst toner cartridges are obviously important, they simply hold the toner. It is the drum that is a vital part of printing properly. When a printer drum starts to wear, the risk of paper jams increases and you will also notice smudge marks on the paper and faded print. These are all signs that it is time to replace your printer drum.
How often do you need to change your printer drum?
It is often said that you should change your printer drum after each toner cartridge, but this is not necessarily the case. In our experience, you can usually get three to four toners worth of printing before the printer drum will need replacing but this will vary user by user- so it’s best to always have a spare printer drum at hand.
