How Do Ink Cartridges Work?
Posted by Adrian Rigby on
Ink cartridges are an essential part of any office or home, but few people know how they actually work. In this blog post, we are going to delve into the mechanics of ink cartridges, the different types, and the technology behind them.
An ink cartridge is a replaceable part of an inkjet printer and contains the ink needed to print documents and photos. The cartridges contain reservoirs for different colours; the main 4 are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK) which mix to create a variety of colours. When a user prints a document, the data is sent from the computer to the printer - this includes the CMYK formula for every pixel within the image. The print head then replicates this using tiny nozzles.
Types of Ink Cartridges
There are two main types of ink cartridges:
1. Integrated cartridges
These have both the ink reservoir and the print head (the part that dispenses the ink) in one unit. They tend to be more expensive but much easier to replace - perfect for home office printers.
2. Separate cartridges
This is where the print head is a permanent part of the printer, so only the ink is replaced each time. Separate cartridges are more common in professional, high-volume printers as it is a cost-effective solution over a longer period.
How Ink Cartridges Function
There are several steps that ink cartridges go through in order to print:
1. Ink delivery - ink is stored within the cartridge’s reservoir; in some cases, this is pressurised to allow a consistent ink flow to the print head.
2. Print head mechanism - the print head contains hundreds of small nozzles that spray ink onto the paper. These control the amount and the placement of the ink droplets.
3. Droplet formation - there are two main types of inkjet technologies, thermal bubble (mainly used by Canon) where resistance is used that heats the ink of the nozzle, and piezoelectric (patented by Epson) where an electric current is applied to a crystal which then pumps the ink droplets out of the nozzle.
Toner Cartridge vs Ink Cartridge
There are quite a few differences between ink cartridges and toner cartridges, the main one being that ink is liquid and toner is powder. Ink cartridges, as the name suggests, are used by inkjet printers, and laser toner is used by laser printers.
Toner cartridges tend to produce more pages than ink cartridges, so are more commonly used within an office environment where there is a high volume of printing. Images printed with ink cartridges are more vibrant, making them more suited for home printers where the quality needs to be higher.
Maintenance of Ink Cartridges
In order to consistently produce high-quality prints, it is important to look after your ink cartridges so they can function optimally. Here are a few tips:
· Clogged nozzles: ink can easily dry out, leading to the nozzles becoming clogged and prints then becoming streaky. If you aren’t regularly using your printer then perform the cleaning function to unclog the nozzles.
· Empty cartridges: printers will alert you when the ink levels start to become low. Replacing the cartridges promptly will prevent damage to the print head.
· Ink leaks: this usually happens if the printer is on an unstable surface, or the cartridges aren’t installed properly.
· Storage: store ink cartridges in a cool, dry place and avoid exposing them to direct sunlight.
